"Red Squared" by Stephanie Novatski
(Winner of the Dyed & Gone to Heaven Contest No. 2)
Three cheers for Stephanie Novatski, our newest Design Contest Winner, who with a skill akin to a magician's sleight of hand, has created a work that emanates a sense of illusion and mystique. Measuring only 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" her composition projects incredible dimension and motion, the various stitches and geometric forms playing off each other. Like a multi-faceted gem, each jewel like layer appears to be superimposed upon another. It is stunning in it's connotation of depth combined with fluidity. The puzzle like quality engages you, each interlocking piece moving seamlesslly into the next and each component integral to the design as a whole. The pattern is composed of different sized squares layered concentrically and diagonally, each square individually defined with black border stitching, which Stephanie chose because of its dramatic contrast to the bright overdyed threads that make up the main design features.
The winning piece is a counted thread design and reflects Stephanie's love of mathematics also evidenced by the title she chose: "Red Squared". For its execution she has used Caron Waterlilies, Antique Rose and Confetti, accentuated with black outlining, supplemented by non metallic silver grey floss, and highlighted with black glass beads. The pattern is a composite of the basic motif in combination with a small piece she designed for a Round Robin of stitchers she met on the internet. Not surprisingly, almost everyone in this group has made use of the Caron Waterlilies threads, in different color combinations, for this project.
When asked how the Caron threads influence Stephanie's work, her immediate respose is "They make me want to do more!." Her design will undoubtedly inspire you to do more, and more, and more...
